Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel

The Dreidel Game is a traditional Jewish game played around the time of Hanukkah. This year Hanukkah is on December 18-December 26. The game dates back to 1890 and was a way to teach children Hebrew, as the symbols on the Dreidel are Hebrew letters.

What you need to play:
- A Dreidel (A four sided spinning top with Hebrew
- Gelt (Traditionally gold covered chocolate coins, but you can use any thing from nut, marbles, marshmallows, pennies, anything!)
- Two or more players

How to read the Dreidel:
There are four Hebrew letters on the symbol on the dreidel.
Shin: put one more token in the pot

Nun: do nothing

Gimmel: take all tokens from the pot

Hay: take half of all tokens lying in the pot. In case of an odd number of tokens, round up.

How to play:
1. Divide the game pieces equally between all the players.

2. Everyone takes a turn at spinning the dreidel, the one with the highest spin has the first turn. Note: nun is highest, then gimmel, hey, and shin. If there is a tie, those who tied get to spin again.

3. Everyone puts one game piece into the middle (the "pot").

4. Spin the dreidel once — depending on the side it lands on, you give or get game pieces from the pot.
Shin: put one more token in the pot
Nun: do nothing
Gimmel: take all tokens from the pot
Hay: take half of all tokens lying in the pot. In case of an odd number of tokens, round up.

5. Pass the dreidel on to the next player after your turn is finished in a clockwise direction.

6. Keep playing until someone wins by collecting all the tokens.

7. If you run out of tokens, you are either "out," or you may ask another player for a loan.

Dreidels are for sale in the Cub Store, or you can print out this image below and make your own!

Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa is a celebration of African-American culture from December 26 - January1. Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga who said his goal was to "give blacks an alternative to the existing holiday of Christmas and give blacks an opportunity to celebrate themselves and their history, rather than simply imitate the practice of the dominant society."

The main symbol of Kwanzaa is the Kinara, a candle holder that holds one candle for each of the days of Kwanzaa. Each day is dedicated to a diffrent principal and named with Swahili words as follows.

Umoja (Unity)
To strive for and to maintain unity in the family and community.

Kujichagulia (Self-determination)
To define and name ourselves, as well as to create and speak for ourselves.

Ujima (Collective work and responsibility)
To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers' and sisters' problems our problems and to solve them together.

Ujamaa (Cooperative economics)
To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together.

Nia (Purpose)
To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.

Kuumba (Creativity)
To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.

Imani (Faith)
To believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

First Semester Sports

Athletics play an important role in the lives of students at Central Middle School, but covering games can be a challenge for a monthly newspaper like the Cub Hub. So, to celebrate the success seen by the Bear Cubs on the fields, courts, and mats, here's a run down of the 2022 fall season at CMS!

Football
This year's football team had a tough journey, and ended their season with 1 win and 6 losses. But the coaches and team remain optimistic and look forward to next year.

"Our record does not reflect the progress that was made by the players. they really came along and got better each game. We just really struggled turning that progress into wins." - Coach Resovich

"We look forward to next year as our two top touch down getters are 7th graders and we look forward to them becoming leaders as 8th graders" - Coach Batie

Cross Country
Cross Country had a great season with many of the runners performing at their best level. Hope to see many of these same students and more come out for Track in the spring.

"The kids were very dedicated and they worked hard." - Coach Henry

Volleyball
The CMS Volleyball season led the path for the other sports to follow, as it gave a strong boost to school sprit and moral. Both teams worked hard and grew as the season progressed, foreshadowing a bright future for all those involved.

"It was a really good season. The girls did a really good job of learning new skills. For next year they just need to keep practicing and getting better serves." - Coach Wikler

Girls Basketball
The girl's Basketball teams has had a strong year of growth. Both teams worked very hard and showed a lot of determination on the court.

"I think this year went phenomenal. Our girls went out there and did their very best. Next year we look forward to having more girls come out and learn the sport so we can achieve the same level of success, if not more, than we did this year." - Couch Funches

Wrestling
When it comes to wrestling, this years team came to represent and did not leave CMS wanting. Many of this years players came out of the season with multiple wins and showed the other schools, it doesn't pay to mess with Bear Cubs.

"We've made great progress and are having an extremely successful season. Almost all of our players boast winning records heading into the sumner tournament." -Coach Resovich

Cheerleading
CMS Cheerleaders help bring school spirit to any event they attend. Wither it's at Volleyball, Basketball or Football, our cheer leaders where there to support the team, cheer on the players, and represent what it means to be a Bear Cub!

"The girls were great! It was a great experience for all of us all around. We got to go to the Cheer Spreader to go see other teams from the area perform, cheer and come together as a cheer community in Kansas." - Coach Doakes

Drill Team
The Drill team girls have been working hard this year to create new and original dance routines to perform at diffrent sporting events. They have built on the slow start coming out of the pandemic to become a half time sensation to show true CMS pride!

"It has been a wonderful start to the dance season! The girls have worked extremely hard this season. Each time the best drops they groove and dance with heart. The team has more than doubled in size since last year and the CMS dancers are looking forward to dancing to even more songs that make you wobble! I am beyond proud of these young ladies! Let's Gooo!" -Coach Taylor

Athletic Director, Mrs. Kincaid summarized the first semester of sports by saying, "It's been great to see so many kids came out since we were not able to play during Covid. We are looking forward to strong spring season."

Central Figures

The People that Make Central Middle School Great!
Ms. Appleba - by Maritxa Sanchez

Ms. Appleba is new this year to Central Middle School, teaching 6th grade social studies. She is from Oklahoma and her family consists of her little sister Sierra, her mom Tracy, and her dad Bryan. She got a job in education because she wanted to make a change for future generations and she had cool teachers when she was younger.

Something Ms. Appleba likes about her job is her students and the people she works with. But she doesn't like is when her student think she doesn't like them when she's frustrated with their effort. Outside of school, she likes to hang out with friends and family and watch sports. If she had not gotten a job in education, she would've been and architect. Something that makes her unique is that she has three big Great Danes (Dogs). Some advice she would give Central Middle School students is to "Try your best and work hard because it all pays off later".

Mr. Speers - by
Erick Regalado Camino

Mr.
Speers is our Creative Writing electives teacher. He has been working here for 3 years. Mr. Speers

is originally from Gardner KS. He has a wife, a daughter, and a dog. The reason he wanted to be a teacher is he wanted to do this for a long time and wanted to work with students. The thing Mr Speer's likes the most about his job is to build relationships with staff and student and learning from students how to be a better teacher. His least favorite thing is that it can be stressful.

When at home Mr. Speers likes to go on runs, write and hang out with family. If he was not in education, he would be a screen writer. Some advice from Mr. Speers is to "dream big and don't let anyone tell you that you are not good enough to do something!"
