CMS Spellers are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

by Maritxa Sanchez

2nd Place: Heidi Antillon , 1st Place: Ivette Valencia and 3rd Place: Ashley Ipina

On January 17th, the Central Middle School spelling bee took place overseen by Mr. Francis. For several weeks the student had been practicing lists of spelling words and techniques for spelling strategies to improve their skills. When the big day came, five central middle school students stepped up to prove their skills.

After a few practice rounds, the bee got underway, giving each participant a chance at a word. One single mistake would cause a student to be eliminated. Things heated up when the final two contestants, Ivette Valencia and Heidi Antillon, took turns trying to out spell each other. Finally Ivette Valencia came out on top by spelling the word 'negative'.

Ivette will now represent central middle school at the Wyandotte County Spelling Bee on Saturday February 4, at Wyandotte High School at 9am. Come out and support Ivette as she represents the Central Middle School Bear Cubs!

Dodge Ball!!

Right before leaving for the Winter Break, the Central Middle School Family Advisory classes were formed into teams and competed in an epic dodge ball tournament! Each FA competed against their own grades first, before going up against the other grades and then finally the teachers.

Central Figures

The People that Make Central Middle School Great!

Mr. Weigel - by Erick Regalado Camino

Mr Weigel is a sixth grade history teacher who has worked at Central Middle School for 2 years.  He's originally from Plainville, Kansas. He lives with his wife and son, with another son on the way.

Mr Weigel use to work on an oil field but came to Kansas and because of his love of history, he decided to become a teacher. His favorite thing about working at CMS is coaching wrestling and helping the kids to become interested in learning.  He could do without having to printing copies of papers.

When not at school he likes going hunting and spending time on his family. If he had never had become a teacher his job would have been a hunting guide. An interesting fact about Mr Weigel is he has a pilot's license and use to work at a deer farm. Mr Weigel's advice to students would be  "don't procrastinate on your homework and stay organized ¨

Ms. Tillotson - by Maritxa Sanchez

Ms. Tillotson is a new social worker at CMS this year. She's originally from Lima, Peru. She has a husband, 2 sisters and both of her parents. She got a job in education because she enjoys listening and
value every student's problems.

The thing she like the most about her job is that she likes is that every day is different and she learns something new. Something she doesn't like about her job are days that she wants to offer more support than she is able to give. Outside of school she likes to read books, bake cookies, look after plants, and watch movies.

If Ms. Tillotson had never gotten into education, she would be a pastry chef. Something that makes her unique is that she grew up in Sucre, Bolivia. Advice she would give CMS students would be that "if students don't know something, they're able to ask for help".
